When we reviewed the August Doorbell Cam Pro back in 2017, it earned our Editors’ Choice for its sharp video quality, clean two way audio, and easy installation. The View doorbell supports IFTTT applets and Amazon Alexa and Google Home voice commands, but you can’t view video on Amazon Echo Show and Google Home Hub devices (video streaming is on the roadmap). However, you can receive Alexa and Google Assistant voice messages when motion is detected and when someone rings the doorbell. I downloaded the app and created an account. I then tapped Set Up A Device, then Set Up A Doorbell Cam, and selected View Doorbell Cam. In our tests, the View delivered highly detailed 1440p video with good color during the day and relatively sharp boucles d’oreille citrouille black and white video at night. Motion detection worked well, without any false alerts from passing cars, and push notifications from motion events and doorbell rings arrived quickly.
That said, the View constantly lost connectivity with the 2.4GHz band of my router. It would connect for a few minutes but always ended up offline, usually while in Wake Up mode (to conserve power, the doorbell goes into lot boucles d’oreilles argent Sleep mode when not being used). The folks at August are aware of the Wi Fi connectivity issues and are working with the doorbell’s Wi Fi chip manufacturer to resolve it.
In addition to the Wi Fi issue, the View needed close to 20 seconds to wake up when using the iOS mobile app, while wake up times was closer to eight seconds when testing with the Android app. This too will be resolved in an iOS app update.
I was able to link my Amazon Echo to the View and receive Alexa announcements when the doorbell had been pressed and when motion was detected. IFTTT integration also worked well; I created an applet to have a Philips Hue light turn on when the View detected motion and it worked every time. Setup is easy and you can have the doorbell work with August smart locks or trigger other smart home devices using IFTTT applets. That said, the View’s inability to maintain a 2.4GHz Wi Fi connection is troubling, and the iOS app needs tweaking. Until August gets these issues ironed out, the Ring Video Doorbell 2 is your best bet for a completely wireless smart doorbell.
